Lake Terrace
Polk County, WI - Space
Set on a narrow isthmus between two lakes in Wisconsin, Lake Terrace is shaped by both its constraints and its opportunities. The lot is tight, with neighboring homes close by, yet the land slopes gently from the street down to the water, offering a gradual and natural approach to the dock. The house is positioned to take full advantage of this condition, stepping with the terrain to create a walk out lower level. This allows all three floors to have direct access to daylight and a strong connection to the lake, while maintaining a sense of privacy from the surrounding properties.
A Familiar Story
The owners have a long history with the site. A small home once stood here, where summers were spent with their children along the water. As the family grew, the need for a larger home became clear. The new house is designed to accommodate that growth, providing individual bedrooms for each family while still prioritizing spaces that bring everyone together. The lake remains the focal point, grounding both daily life and shared moments.
The constraints of the lot played a central role in shaping the design. With limited room to expand along the shoreline, the house extends toward both the lake and the street. Its position on an isthmus allows the upper level to capture views in two directions, while the walk out lower level introduces additional living space without overburdening the floors above. Natural materials, clean lines, and a sense of comfort guide the interior, creating a home that feels both grounded and open.
Between Two Gables
The house takes shape as two primary volumes that recall the familiar form of gabled lake cabins. One volume houses the living room and screened porch, oriented toward gathering and views. The other contains the bedrooms, offering a quieter and more private retreat. Between them, a lower volume weaves through the plan, connecting the two with the kitchen and dining spaces.
This central element links the home both physically and socially, allowing movement and activity to flow naturally between the spaces. Above, the roof extends outward to define the entry at the front and provide shelter over the lakeside deck. The composition balances clarity and warmth, creating a home that feels rooted in its setting while supporting the rhythms of family life.
